Perk Up Your Rank on Google Local Search

Google Local recently broadens their search results to display ten companies when a user types a keyword with a city in the search term. Most of the time, these results are at or close to the top of the first page of Google’s search results.

But, generally, there are more than ten companies competing for that keyword the user typed in. A user will find more when he clicks on the “more results” tab to get additional listings, but realistically, these ten companies have the best chance of getting listed.

To improve your ranking and get listed in the so called “10 pack”, you will need to fill out your profile at Google.com/local. Fill it out as completely as possible because the more information you give Google, the more likely they will rank you high.

Next, you should have a website that people can link to. If you have no website, Google will display a page with your contact information. But initial studies have shown that listings that include links to a business’ website increase the odds of being in the top 10 results.

Another factor that seems to be at play is if your location is close to the city center. Unfortunately, Google seem to be unable to determine the distance between the user’s location and the businesses. Hence, they use the city center as a substitute. As there is no way you can change your address easily, there may not be much you can do about this.

You can get better ranks in local search by registering your company with different free directories and yellow pages. Joining review sites like yelp.com can also add exposure to your company.

Additionally, upload photos in your listings to boost your ranking. A photo of your storefront, happy customers using your product or service, and the owners or workers will give a credible impression to the searchers. All of these things can help.

Any updates to your local listing can help you move up now that Google 10 Pack becomes more important for local businesses in attracting customers.
